Continuous Temperature Monitoring Along the Entire Cable Route
NEKA delivers advanced Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) solutions based on fiber optic monitoring technology from Omnisens. The system provides a continuous real-time temperature profile along the entire cable route, enabling the detection of hotspots, overload conditions, cooling deficiencies, and developing faults before they lead to outages.
By utilizing existing or integrated fiber optic cables, DTS can monitor both onshore and subsea cable systems over very long distances with high accuracy. The solution is suitable for HVAC, HVDC, and MV systems, as well as export cables, transmission networks, and data center infrastructure.
How Does DTS Work?
DTS uses fiber optic cables as a continuous temperature sensor. A laser pulse is transmitted through the fiber, and analysis of the backscattered light allows the temperature at every point along the cable to be calculated. The result is a complete real-time temperature map of the entire installation.
This provides significantly more information than conventional point sensors, which only monitor individual locations.
Benefits of DTS
-
Continuous 24/7 monitoring
-
Temperature profile along the entire cable route
-
Early hotspot detection
-
Precise fault location identification
-
Reduced risk of cable failure
-
Improved utilization of existing cable capacity
-
Integration with SCADA and other monitoring systems
Cable Capacity Optimization
Many cable systems operate conservatively because operators lack accurate information about the actual cable temperature.
By combining DTS with thermal models and Dynamic Cable Rating (DCR), available cable capacity can be continuously calculated based on real operating conditions. This enables operators to:
-
Increase power transfer capacity
-
Document available reserve capacity
-
Defer costly grid investments
-
Optimize operation of critical infrastructure
Omnisens provides solutions for both temperature monitoring and dynamic cable rating of power cables.
